The Very Best Boating Companion of All
Children's sermon
Object:
A life jacket, boat ride tickets
“And they were filled with great awe...who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Good morning girls and boys,
It's so good to see you this morning. How are you? If you ask me how I am, I would say “splendid.” Now I have a question for you. Have you ever you been on a boat? (children answer)
Let's pretend we are going for a boat ride this morning. You are all welcome. Here is a ticket for each one of you. Okay? All aboard. But wait. If you were going to take this boat ride across what could be a dangerous lake, what would you take along?
A map of the lake? (children answer) A jug of water? (children answer) A waterproof pillow? Your pastor? Water skies? A life jacket? Other?
What is the most important item to take along on this lake you have never been before?
Yes, a life jacket.
The Bible tells how Jesus and his disciples went across a lake, like we are pretending we are, and a vicious storm came up. Wind blew. (have children make boat rocking motions) Little waves became big waves-- splashing and pounding. The disciples shook with fear. Eyes wide open. Hands praying. Water pouring into the boat. They bailed out water as fast as they could. If they had life jackets what would they be doing right now? Yep, putting them on. (let's pretend we are putting our life jackets on too) The disciples cried out to Jesus who was fast asleep in the stern. “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
Jesus, the teacher, who has been teaching the disciples about faith and trust, is surprised and asks “have you still no faith?” He then tells the storm to cease. The wind stops. The seas go back to sleep.
The best companion you and I can ever have when we are in a tough spot, is the same as the disicples -- Jesus the teacher. Jesus teaches us to not be afraid. We can trust this Jesus person who even the wind and the sea obey.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are best companion ever. Come with us when we sail, walk, run, work, or play. Amen.
