Together We Love
Children's sermon
Object:
make a 3- or 4-part puzzle out of tag board with “Love” imprinted on the face
“I ask...that they may be one, as we are one...so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them, even as you have loved me.” (v. 20a, 22,23)
Good morning children,
Who has ever put a puzzle together? (children respond)
I have 3 pieces of something here. (show puzzle apart) Can you guess what it is? (children guess) It's a puzzle. I made it. In 3 pieces and apart it is nothing. Just scraps. Notice, when I put the puzzle together, as a unit, it spells what? (children respond) Yes, put together, as a unit, it spells love.
That's what Jesus prayed for. He prayed for love. He prayed that love would happen by togetherness. By the disciple's and all believer's togetherness, everybody in the world would know God's love. Jesus prayed that his followers would become one like he and God were one. Put the puzzle together as one, and you get love. (applause?)
Let's pretend I asked one of you like, _________, to physically lift me up into the air.
Since I weigh over one hundred pounds could you do it? (child responds) Of course not.
If you were a superhero like Wonder Woman or Amazon Woman or Superman you could do it. But you are not.
Now if 4 or 5 of you children here today lifted me up in the air together — could you do it? (children respond) Yes, together you have strength and power as one. As one unit you can do amazing things for God.
So it is, when believers like you and me, are one, as a unit, like the puzzle, we show great love to the world. Alone we are weak. Together we are strong.
So what are ways children can get together and show God's love to the world?
Your Sunday school class visits the nursing home folks?
Your 4-H group cleans up a park honoring the environment?
Your family sings, ushers and assists with communion at church?
Jesus prayed a lot. Let us pray too: Dear Jesus, we are learning to love in the best way, by loving together. Working together, your love is already seen by everyone. Amen.
