Object:
a newspaper story about some non-Christian aspect of
Christmas
Good evening! Can any one of you tell me what tomorrow is?
(Let them answer.) Of course, tomorrow is Christmas, and what is
it that we are celebrating tomorrow? (Let them answer.) Yes, we
are celebrating the birth of Jesus. All of the presents, the
decorations, the good food, everything is supposed to remind us
of the birth of Jesus.
Here's a newspaper story about Christmas. (Show the
article.) It talks about _____________, but it doesn't say
anything about Jesus. It doesn't say anything at all about whose
birthday we are celebrating on Christmas. Can you imagine seeing
an article like this in the paper telling about somebody's
birthday, and yet it didn't even mention the name of the person
whose birthday was being celebrated? (Let them answer.) No, of
course not, but this happens all the time with the birthday of
Jesus.
Now do you suppose that there are some people right here in
our community who celebrate Christmas, but never give a thought
to what it really means? Are there some people who have presents
and decorations and all the normal Christmas things, but never
think about the fact that Christmas is the birthday of Jesus?
(Let them answer.) Yes, unfortunately, there are a lot of people
who do that. What do you think we should do about it? (Let them
answer.)
When the shepherds heard the news about Jesus and they went
and saw him, what did they do? (Let them answer.) They went and
told everybody about it! Do you think that's what we ought to do?
Should we try to tell people about Jesus and let them know that
he is the reason for Christmas? (Let them answer.) Yes, indeed. I
think that's exactly what we should do. Let's ask God to help us.
Dear Lord: Please help us to tell everyone the wonderful news
about the birth of Your Son Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
