Teachers or Parents: The theme of this week's Gospel as well
as the epistle is worthiness or worth-ship. Use comparative items
to judge worth. Use a dime and a dollar bill, for example. Show
how the dollar, even though it is made of paper instead of metal,
is worth much more than the dime. You might also compare the
relative worthiness of an insect compared to a family pet. Wrap
it up by talking about why Jesus is worthy of worship and the
disciples are not. Likewise Moses or Elijah or angels or
ministers or teachers are not worthy of worship. We can honor
people and we do honor them -- but we worship only one: Jesus.
This might be an occasion for talking about worship at your church. Explain how Jesus fits in to what you do when you worship. Ask for their favorite parts and their least favorite part. "What part makes you feel excited, like Peter?"
