Object:
two pictures: Jesus on the cross and Jesus at the Last Supper
Good morning! I brought two pictures to show you today. Here
is a picture of Jesus having a dinner with his friends (show the
picture), and here is one of Jesus suffering on the cross (show
the picture). Now, if you were Jesus, which of these two things
would you rather be doing? (Let them answer.) Yes, of course. If
any of us were given that choice, we would rather be doing
anything other than suffering on a cross. In fact, I doubt that
there is anything that would convince one of us to allow
ourselves to be crucified, but that's exactly what Jesus did.
Do you think Jesus could have stopped those men from nailing
him to a cross? (Let them answer.) Yes, he could have. After all
he has all the power of God. He could have zapped those men into
nothingness and not allowed them to touch him -- but he didn't!
Why didn't he? (Let them answer.) If Jesus had not been willing
to die on that cross, our sins would not be forgiven, and all of
us would be lost forever. He went to the cross willingly so that
we could be saved.
The night before he was killed he prayed to his Father, God,
and told him that he really didn't want to die on that cross. But
he ended that prayer by saying that he would do what the Father
wanted even if it was the hardest thing he had ever done. God had
to let him die that way in order for us to be saved. Jesus must
love us a lot if he was willing to die that way for us, don't you
think? (Let them answer.) Let's tell him how thankful we are that
he did it.
Dear Jesus: We are so sorry that you had to suffer so much to pay
for our sins. We are grateful that you were willing to do it for
us. Amen.
