A special door
Children's sermon
Object:
a pretend door with a pretend door knob
Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little
child will never enter it. (v. 15)
Good morning, boys and girls. Please stand up and line up over on this side of the church. Thank you. I would like for you to come up, one at a time, and go through my pretend door. (pretend to open the door and step out and back in several times) Good, now does everyone know where the door is? (let them answer) I wonder if any of you can see my pretend door. (let them answer) Okay, now come forward one at a time, knock on the door and I will let you in. After you have come in, you can take a seat up here. (point to the spot where you want them to be seated -- have each one come forward, open the door, shake their hands, and then close the door until the next one knocks -- repeat this until all of the children are seated)
Wonderful, we have all entered through the door. Do you know what kind of a special door it was that you entered? (let them answer) I didn't think you knew, but I am going to tell you in just a minute.
Jesus loved children. He would walk with them and hold their hands. He would talk to them and tell them stories. He would eat with them and enjoy a good laugh. He would care for them when they had a bump or a bruise. Jesus really loved children and he liked for them to be around him. Once in a while, the disciples thought the little children were in the way and keeping Jesus from talking to important people, or healing someone that was very sick. The disciples liked children, too, but they did not think that children were as important as big people.
One day Jesus noticed that the children were being pushed away and told to be quiet. Jesus walked over and told the disciples to stop keeping the children from him. Jesus took a couple by the hand and then sat down and asked all of the little ones to sit with him. It was quite a sight. But then he said something really important. He said that anyone who does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child would never enter it.
Now do you know where you are? When you walked through the door and sat down you entered someplace really special. Do you remember the words that Jesus said? (let them answer) That's right, good listening. You are in the kingdom of God and you are only a child. Isn't that special? I think so, I really think so. When you leave don't forget to close the door. God bless you. Amen.
