"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (v. 34)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you know someone who uses a wallet? (allow answers) Lots of people carry wallets in their back pocket or in their purse. A wallet is something that you use to keep your money, credit cards, identification cards, and other small things safe. What have you seen people keep in their wallets? (allow answers) Usually people have dollar bills and credit cards. But some people also have something else. Some people have photographs! How many of you know someone who keeps photographs in their wallet? (allow answers) Whose photographs do they keep? Do they keep photos of supermodels or of beautiful islands? Probably not! What photos do they keep in their wallets? (allow answers) They keep photos of their family! A grandfather might have a photograph of all his grandkids in his wallet, so that if he starts talking to someone he can pull out those pictures and brag about his grandchildren. Have you ever seen someone do that? (allow answers) Lots of people do it!
What do you think real treasure is for people who keep lots of photos in their wallets? Is their real treasure their credit cards and their cash? (allow answers) Probably not. Their real treasure is probably the people who are in their photographs.
When we think of treasure, we like to think of maybe a chest full of gold coins or precious stones. But treasure isn't always about things that are expensive or are worth a lot of money. Something that is treasure might just be something that we hold dear to us. For many people, their treasure is their family -- and it shows when they keep photos of their family members in their wallets. Some people have more photographs shoved in their purse than dollars!
Our Bible verse today talks about treasure. It says, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." It is saying what people who keep photos in their wallets already know -- treasure isn't necessarily money or jewels. Treasure can be whatever you value in your life.
What are some things that you value in your life? (allow answers) There are lots of things that we think are cool -- maybe toys or cars or money -- but only a few things that deserve to be really valued. Things that deserve to be really valued are things like family, friends, and -- most importantly -- God. When we value God and the people we love, we are creating a treasure that can never be taken away from us. Amen.
