Silly!
Children's sermon
Object:
A nonreligious figure statue or figurine
Let's pretend this morning. Let's pretend that we believe
that this figurine is our god. If we really believed that this
figurine is our god, we would want to pray to it. We would want
to sing hymns to our god. We would want to worship our god. We
would want to give money to our god. If we treated this figurine
like it were god, what would happen? (Let them answer.) That's
right. NOTHING would happen because we really know this figurine
is just that -- it is a figurine and certainly NOT God!
We know that there is only one God and that God loves us and sent his son Jesus to live, die and rise again so that we can know of God's power and love for us. That is what we believe as Christians. But some people believe there are many gods. Some people actually believe that their god is like this figurine here. They worship their god like we worship the true God. We know that only God can hear and answer our prayers. That is why we say our prayers to the one, true God.
This is a nice little figurine here, but it certainly is not like our God. This figurine is made of plaster. Plaster has no power like God. If we worshiped and prayed to this figurine, we would be wasting our time and our life.
Just as some people worship figurines like this, many more people worship other objects. Some people act as if money is their god by making money the most important thing in their lives. Other people act as if their friends are more important than anything else. They use their whole lives to make friends almost like a god.
Instead of plaster figurines for a god or money or friends, what do people really need? (Let them answer.) They need to know about the true God -- the God we worship and pray to. They need to know about how Jesus came to set us free from silly beliefs like the beliefs that figurines have power like God. They need to know that money is not the most important thing in the world or that friends are not the most important thing in the world. God is most important and only God can be God!
Dear Lord: Thank you for being our God. Amen.
