Signs of our seasons
Children's sermon
Object:
an umbrella and a snow shovel
Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon
as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already
near." (vv. 29-30)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today is the first Sunday in Advent. Today begins a new year for the church. It is like New Year's when everything starts over. For hundreds and hundreds of years, the people of God prayed that God would send a Messiah to earth to lead all of the people. They knew it was God's plan, they just did not know when it was going to happen. Advent is the time of year when we pray and sing and hope that God will do it again. We know that a little over 2,000 years ago God sent Jesus into the world as a baby. Now we pray that Jesus will return to us and begin a new world for all who have lived and died and for those of us who are living. This is the plan of Advent. How will we know when this is going to happen? (let them answer)
Let's take a look at just a couple of things and you tell me what is going to happen when people start using these things. (put up the umbrella) When you see people with something like this, what do you think is going to happen? (let them answer) That's right, it is going to rain or is already raining.
Let's look at something else. When you see someone using this, what is happening? (let them answer) That's right, it is snowing. An umbrella means rain and a snow shovel means snow. We don't have to guess what is happening, we know what is happening. They are signs of our seasons.
Jesus tells us that we will know when he is returning. There will be signs in the heavens and on the earth that the time is coming for Jesus to return. When we see those signs, we need to be ready because God is beginning a new world and we want to be a part of it. That is why in Advent we pray so hard that Jesus will come back and that we will be a part of the great crowd that is looking for him.
As you grow up a little more, you will hear about the signs that God will send just like we tell others with our umbrellas or snow shovels that it is either raining or snowing. Amen.
