Shiny money
Children's sermon
Object:
Thirty shiny quarters
Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests
and said, "What will you give me if I betray him to you?" They paid him thirty
pieces of silver. And from that moment he began to look for an opportunity to
betray him. (26:14-16)
Good morning, boys and girls. Is anyone here named Judas? (let them answer) Do you go to school with anyone named Judas? (let them answer) Do you know anyone named Judas? (let them answer) Does anyone have a pet named Judas or know of a dog or cat called Judas? (let them answer)
Judas is not a popular name today even though the name is used in the Bible. Other people in the Bible are also named Judas.
How many of you remember something about the Judas in the Bible? (let them answer and repeat their answers if they are correct)
Judas was one of the disciples of Jesus like Peter, John, James, and others. Judas was the disciple that took care of the money for Jesus and the disciples. Judas was an important disciple.
One day, Judas decided that he would do a bad thing. He went to people that were trying to kill Jesus and told them that he would trade Jesus to them if they would pay him. They all agreed that at a certain time, when Jesus was alone and there were not a lot of followers around him, that Judas would point Jesus out. He said that he would kiss Jesus on the cheek so that they would get the right man. Because Judas was willing to do this, people who hated Jesus paid Judas thirty pieces of silver. (show them the thirty quarters) How much was thirty pieces of silver? It was about the same amount of money that a person could earn working at his job for twelve weeks. That's all. Judas sold Jesus for twelve weeks of work.
Did Jesus know that Judas was up to this terrible thing? The Bible tells us Jesus knew that Judas was a traitor and a schemer. Jesus also knew that God was watching over him and that God would use whatever happened to him as a way to love us all.
Remember the next time you see some shiny money that Judas sold Jesus to the priests in the temple. I hope that the thirty pieces will also remind you that Jesus died for us so that we could be in his family. Amen.
