Sharing riches
Children's sermon
Object:
a box of food, a nice dress/suit, a first-aid kit, a flashlight, pillows,
blankets
As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty,
or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God who richly provides us
with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works,
generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good
foundation for the future so that they may take hold of the life that really is life. (vv.
17-19)
Good morning, boys and girls. I am looking for rich people today. Is there anyone here who thinks they are rich? (let them answer) Good, we have some very rich children. Do you like being rich? (let them answer) If you were not rich, what would you be? (let them answer) Maybe you would be poor. If you were poor would you like being poor or would you want to be rich? (let them answer) Rich seems to be better. God loves certain kinds of rich people. Some people are very good at what they do and they make a lot of money.
This morning, I brought along a few things that money buys. It buys lots of food. You can have fine steaks, great salads, special breads, and wonderful desserts. Being rich means good food. I have also learned that money can buy wonderful clothes like fine suits or beautiful dresses. A rich person can go to a doctor often, learn to take great care of his/her body, buy the most expensive medicines, and live in the best climates. Being rich is good for good health. Rich people never have to live in the dark. Their homes are full of light and outside of the house there are lots of lights. If you are in a dark place you can have a big flashlight. Finally, rich people sleep well. They have wonderful sheets, blankets, and pillows.
God wants rich people who have been given their gifts to share with people who are poor. Rich people can afford to give money, food, clothing, good health, and good places to sleep to others. No one should be hungry if there is a rich person who knows him/her. We are talking about people who do not have a home to live in or food to eat, or places to sleep, or doctor appointments.
God suggests that the rich should share the things they have with people who have very little. If every one of our families in church today brought food for an extra person; clothes for an extra person; sheets, blankets, and pillows for an extra person, and they did it every week, we would be able to help many poor people. I think we would really enjoy giving our riches to others. We would be happy people and not just rich people. I think God would like that. Amen.
