Seeing better
Children's sermon
Object:
some eyeglasses, a magnifying glass, and binoculars
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to test our eyesight. How many of you have ever had your eyes tested? (let them answer) It is kind of fun and it doesn't hurt. Do any of you wear glasses? (let them answer) Very good, the glasses really help you see better, don't they? (let them answer) Today, God teaches us why our eyes are important. God is talking about love and how he is love. If a tree is wood and a rock is stone then God is love. Does that make sense? (let them answer) Good!
There are also some people who are friends and some who are strangers. Sometimes there are people whom we know that are not our friends. Even if we don't like people, we still love God. Do you know someone that you do not like? (let them answer) Almost everyone knows someone that they do not like. Would you say that you hate them or do you just dislike them? (let them answer) I hope you don't hate anyone. God says you can't love him and hate other people. Do you think that is true? (let them answer)
I think we should talk this over with God. Does anyone see God close by? Take a good look, this is God's house and surely he is here. Someone stand on the top step and take a good look. One of you could go to the side of the church and see if God is over there. Would it help if you had glasses? (hold up the eyeglasses) Would someone like to try on these glasses? (let them answer) Has anybody seen God? He must be at home somewhere. I have a magnifying glass. (hold up the magnifying glass) It makes things look much closer. If God is around the altar or in the pulpit, could you see him with a magnifying glass? I also brought along some binoculars. (hold up the binoculars) You can see things that are far away and make them seem very close. Perhaps God is near the ceiling. Someone with binoculars should surely see him. What do you think? Has anyone seen God? (let them answer)
Well, I knew that you would not see God. No one, except for Jesus, has ever seen God. Yet people who have never seen him say that they love him and believe in him. God says you can't love him if you hate others. It just doesn't work when we hate people we can see and love God whom we cannot see. God says we must first love our friends and strangers before we can love God. Friends and strangers need our love. God says we must love each other before we can say we love God. God loves us all. Amen.
The next time you use one of these things that help you see better, I want you to think about the day you searched for God and couldn't find him, but you also learned to love both friends and strangers. Amen.
