Children's sermon
Object:
Teachers: The story of the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness is confusing to children, whose only image of a "devil" is from pictures of a devil with a red outfit, horns, and a pitchfork. Perhaps a better image is to take off the letter D and use the rest of the word -- EVIL. Some of the images in the story are the whole world, the pinnacle of the Temple, and the stones. Use these three items and see how creative the children can be in putting the three items together to help them remember the story. Some may just draw the three items separately, others may combine them to form a collective image. Maps from an old auto club atlas, pictures of churches, and small stones might be used. Another child might create a picture by putting a world in the background, a church over the top of it, and open doors with stones inside. Still another may draw a steeple with a globe perched on it with stones at the base of the steeple. There are endless possibilities. If you have artists in your congregation, you may want them to help the children discuss creative, artistic ways to capture the EVIL in the world on paper. If time allows, let all the children explain their pictures as they retell the temptation story.
Parents: Let your child explain his/her temptation picture and tell you the story. You may want to try your own hand at creatively designing your own artistic retelling of the story.
