a newspaper advertisement
Then Jesus asked, "Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they?" (v. 17)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today we're going to look at this newspaper advertisement. How many of you have read a newspaper before? (allow answers) How many of you read the advertisements in the newspaper? (allow answers) People who put advertisements in newspapers are trying to spread the word about a business or a product. What are some things that you have seen advertisements for? (allow answers)
It costs a lot of money to put an advertisement in a newspaper -- actually, it costs a lot of money to put an advertisement anywhere! Where are some other places you have seen advertisements? (allow answers) We see them in magazines, on billboards, on TV and on the radio. On TV and the radio, we call advertisements "commercials." We see advertisements all over the place!
The thing about advertisements is that businesses have to make sure that a lot of people see their ads -- whether they see them in newspapers, magazines, billboards, on the radio, on TV. Studies have shown that of all the people who see a company's ads, the ads will only make about one person in one hundred go to that store or buy that product. Imagine that! It's like if you invited one hundred people to a party and only one person came. How would that make you feel? (allow answers)
It probably wouldn't make you feel very good. In fact, something kind of like that happened to Jesus in our gospel today. Jesus healed ten people who had a terrible disease. They had been kicked out of their homes by the disease and had not been allowed to be with their families -- so when they were cured, it was great news for them! They could go home again! If Jesus healed you of a disease, what would you do? (allow answers) The first thing you should do is thank Jesus for healing you, of course! But in our Bible story, we find out that isn't what happened. Instead, nine of the people Jesus healed left immediately. Only one person came back to tell Jesus thank you.
This story has an important lesson in it for us. Sometimes we do nice things for other people and they don't tell us thank you or show us that they are thankful. How does that make you feel? (allow answers) Not good! But this story shows us that sometimes people don't say thank you. That shouldn't stop us from doing good things. Instead, we need to be like advertisers: even though only one person in a hundred listens to their ads, they keep doing their work. They are not discouraged -- and instead of being upset about the 99 people who didn't listen to their ad, they are happy for the one who did. This week do kind things even when people don't say thank you. Amen.
