Pray Daily
Children's sermon
Object:
Prayer beads (or any item reflecting prayer)
The Point: Jesus models a life of prayer for us to follow.
The Lesson: Welcome, children. I am thankful that you came up to share with me.
How many of you say a prayer before you eat? I am happy to see that almost all of you do. When we pray before we eat, we are thanking God for all the things we need. Our food, our air, our homes, and especially our families that love us and support us.
How many of you say a prayer at bed time or maybe when you get up in the morning? When we pray in the evening, we give thanks to God for bringing us safely through the day. It is a special time to ask Jesus to forgive us for the things that we did that weren't kind or loving or were disobedient.
Prayer is a very important part of our lives. I brought with me this morning my prayer beads. They are just ordinary beads, but I use them as a tool in my prayer time. Saint Paul said that we should pray at all times (Ephesians 6:18). When we pray we are turning our eyes and minds towards Jesus. We are asking him to be in our lives and to be a part of the circumstances around us. Most importantly we ask Jesus to help our family and friends.
As we hear about Jesus, we find out that prayer was an important part of his daily life. Today we listened to a prayer that Jesus prayed. He prayed that he would bring God glory and honor. He prayed that God would make us, as we follow him, a part of God's family. He prayed for unity among his followers, the Church. Most importantly, Jesus prayed that we would reach out to those who are not in God's family that they might join us.
Jesus' life was filled with prayer times and so should ours be. Pray when you wake up. Pray at meals. Pray when you go to bed. And find a special time during the day to lift your prayers to Jesus. Anytime is a right time to pray.
Prayer: Children, as we prepare to pray let us hold hands and unite our hearts in prayer to Jesus. Jesus, as we come together as your children, we pray for your presence in our lives. Help us to bring glory and honor to you. Use us to bring other children into our church family. With the gift of your Holy Spirit call us often to prayer. Jesus, in your name we pray. Amen.
