hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty." (v. 35)
Good morning, boys and girls. Happy Thanksgiving, to all of you. We have many things to be happy about this Thanksgiving. We are thankful for our families, friends, home, school, church, and many other things. Life is pretty good to all of us, but we always wish things were better. We would like a world where there was no war, no one was sick, and everyone had a house to live in with plenty of clothes to wear in the cold winter and the warm summer.
Another thing we wish is that there were no hungry people anywhere in the world. We asked everyone to bring some kind of food to our service today so that we could give it to the hungry people in our town. It is hard to believe that there are people in our town that do not have enough to eat to stay healthy. The people that are hungry are also poor. Most of them do not have a doctor when they are sick and some of them do not even have a house to live or sleep in. They have a very sad life. We remember them today with our gifts of food. We should think of them more often with food and other gifts. No one wants to be hungry or poor. In the time of Jesus, there were beggars. Some begged for money, some begged for healing, and some begged for food. Jesus was always sorry for them and did things to help them. He also reminded people that they should share what they owned with the poor.
Jesus taught us that there were a lot of ways to be hungry. One way is to be hungry for food, but people are also hungry for love and friendship. When you are lonely, you wish that someone would remember and visit you. When you are all alone and you want someone to love you and there is no one that really cares for you, then you are starving for love.
Jesus taught us that his love was for everyone that was hungry for God and that he could fill everyone up with God's love. When you are filled with God's love, it is hard to be alone and sad. Jesus said that he was the bread of life. He is not whole wheat, white, or rye bread but instead he is God's love. God's love helps us think about how we can share what we have with others. That is why we bring this food so that we can share God's love with the poor.
Maybe we can start something new. If you asked your parents and neighbors each week for one kind of food to share with the poor, you would be giving people God's love as well as something new to eat. Let's think about it. I will bring some boxes every Sunday to church. I will put them right here and when you come for the children's sermon, we will fill the boxes with God's love. I like that idea and I hope you will like it, also. Amen.
