No God but one
Children's sermon
Object:
a copy of the Ten Commandments
Good morning! Do any of you know what the Ten Commandments
are? (Let them answer.) I brought along a copy of the Ten
Commandments to show you. (Show the Commandments.) God gave these
Ten Commandments to us a long time ago. He gave them to us
because He loves us and He knows that our lives will be happy if
we follow these rules. I want to talk with you today about just
one of these rules. It's the first one. Can one of you read it
for me? (If one of them can read, let him or her read. Otherwise
you read it to them.)
God tells us that He is the only God and He doesn't want us
to worship any God other than Him. Do you know anybody who
worships a different God than the one we worship here? (Let them
answer. In this pluralistic society, there is a good chance that
they know somebody with a different religion than Christianity.)
Anybody who worships a different God has a false religion,
because there is only one God and that is the God we worship.
Now there is another way you could break this Commandment.
What if you love somebody or something more than you love God?
Would you be breaking this Commandment? (Let them answer.) Yes,
you would. So it's not just by worshiping other Gods that we
break this Commandment. We break it if we love anything at all
more than we love God.
Let's ask God to help us keep this Commandment.
Dear Father in Heaven: We know that You are the only God and that
we should always worship only You. Help us to be faithful
children who worship You and never love anything in the world
more than we love You. Amen.
