No beginning or ending
Children's sermon
Object:
a piece of string and a circular object like a ring or a
hula hoop
See this string? (Lay it on the floor in front of you.) It
is a straight line, and it looks like it has a beginning and an
end. Maybe it starts here and ends here. (Drag your finger along
the string left to right.) Or maybe it starts here and ends here.
(Now drag your finger right to left.) One thing we do know is
that this string doesn't go on forever.
Now look at this hula hoop (or ring). Where does it begin?
Where does it end? (Responses.) No, it doesn't have a beginning
or an ending because it is a circle, not a line. It just goes on
forever and ever.
The Bible tells us that God is like a circle because he had
no beginning and no ending. In our lesson today we hear God
saying that he is the one "who is, and who was, and who is to
come." That means that there never was and never will be a time
without God. He is eternal, everlasting, and forever.
On Easter Day we learned that death couldn't stop Jesus.
Nothing can stop Jesus. Jesus is a part of God, and God goes on
forever. (Hold up the string.) Some things in your life will have
beginnings and endings. One thing you can be sure of, though, is
that God's love for you isn't like that. (Hold up the hula hoop
or ring.) God's love is like this hoop: always there and never
ending. He loved you even before you were born. That is a special
kind of love.
Prayer: Dear God, you have always been here loving us and taking
care of us. Thank you for reminding us that you will be here and
love us forever. Amen.
