A nice tune
Children's sermon
Object:
A musical instrument (a piano would be great)
Good morning! How many of you like to play a musical
instrument? (Let them answer.) Music is so much fun! I like good
music! I love the music our children's choir makes when they sing
in worship. Music is a real joy. It makes people happy.
Now, let me ask you a question. See if you like the music I'm going to play on this piano. (Play some dissonant chords.) Do you like my music? Now be honest here. (Let them answer.) I can understand that you might not like that music. In fact, we wouldn't even call it music because it's really just noise!
When people don't get along with each other and each person thinks she or he is better than the others and they argue and fight -- it's like noise! Now, listen to this and see what you think. (If you can play the
piano, play a melodic tune. Otherwise, play a chord or two. Your church musician might be willing to help you with this children's sermon.) That is a different sound. That's music! Do you like it? (Let them answer.)
When people can get along with each other and each person values the ideas and opinions and people talk sensibly instead of arguing -- it's a joy!
Each note I play is a different note, just as we are all different people. But when the notes are played in a chord, it is beautiful. The notes are different and yet they go together to make a nice sound.
We are all different. God made each of us special. What a wonderful thing it is when God's people get along with each other and respect each other. It is like music to God's ears! I'm glad that we can get along well here in this congregation and make beautiful music for God.
Dearest God: Thank you for making each of us different and yet we can all get along. When we do fight and argue, help us remember to respect each other and love each other like Jesus loves us. Amen.
