A New Commandment
Children's sermon
Null
Object:
a list of the Ten Commandments
The Point: love one another as Jesus has loved us
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls. Thank you for joining me as we share God’s word together.
I have with me a list of the Ten Commandments. (show the list) Can anyone tell me the commandments? (let children respond) They come from the Exodus 20. God gave these commandments to Moses to share with the people of God. The commandments were a gift to help people to live in fellowship with God and with one another. If we all followed the commandments, our communities would be places of nurturing care and support. They would be communities of love.
In our Bible reading Jesus gives his disciples a new command. The new commandment is to love one another as he loved us. Jesus loves with an unending love. He loves whether we want to be loved or not. Jesus’ love forgives and nurtures. Just when you think that you are unlovable and beyond loving, Jesus’ love is there to receive you and welcome you back into the family of God. Because Jesus first loved us, we can love with his kind of love.
To love one another is not a new commandment. What is new is that Jesus has now defined the love we are to have. We are to love with a love like his. Jesus’ love is a sacrificial love. When we so freely love and care about others, we will bring others into the family of God. Jesus’ love will help us all to remain strong in our faith even in a hostile world. By his life, death, and resurrection, Jesus has shown us how to love so that his kingdom may spread throughout the world.
Love one another as Jesus loves us.
Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed!
Prayer: Let us unite our hands and hearts together as we pray. Jesus, you have showed us a love that builds your community here on earth. We praise you and thank you for that amazing love for us. Help us now to love each other with your love. In the name of our Savior Jesus we pray. Amen.
