Many members, one body
Children's sermon
Object:
some postage stamps
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought some postage stamps
with me this morning because they remind me of this morning's
lesson. (Show the stamps.) How many of you are in a Sunday school
class? (Let them answer.) I'm going to tell you a story about
some children in a Sunday school class who were your age. They
used these stamps.
There was a Sunday school class. The members of this class were very different from one another. One member liked baseball, another liked to dance, another liked to play outside, another liked to draw pictures. Is your class like that? Do different members of your class have different interests? (Let them answer.) It appeared that the members of this class did not have much in common. Then one of their class members became sick. She was so sick that she couldn't come to church. The members of the class -- remember they didn't have many common interests -- each decided to send their friend get well cards. So they each bought some stamps (hold up the stamps) and sent her cards.
This class reminds me of our lesson this morning. The lesson tells us that there are many members in Christ's church. All of those members have different interests. Some like baseball, some like to dance, some like to play outdoors, and some like to draw. While members of Christ's church may have differences they are still all members of Christ's church.
Here's what I want you to think about this week. Everyone in church today is different from the person next to him. Everyone has special interests. However, when we come together we make up what we call the body of Christ. That body is the church. We all have the same interest when we come together. That is to learn more about God's love and to ask God's forgiveness. Thank you for coming this morning.
