Magnify his holy name!
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: As we celebrate this special Sunday
honoring Mary as the mother of our Lord, it is important to
remember that the focus of our worship must always be on Jesus.
In the Magnificat, Mary herself reminds us that she too, like us,
is a sinful human being in need of a Savior. Our children need to
understand that we honor many special people whom God has used
for His own purposes, but we worship only God alone.
*Ask the children to name as many special people as they can
that God has used through the centuries to fulfill His will on
earth and list them on a board or easel. You may want to help
them get started by naming people like Joseph, Moses, David,
Peter, Paul, and so forth. If they do not name Mary, suggest that
she be added to the list. Lead a brief discussion of how God used
each person listed. Spend most of the time on Mary, since this is
the day we honor her memory. Emphasize how God takes ordinary
people like Mary and uses them for great things.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Read 1 Timothy 2:5 and ask the assembly if anyone can give
a definition of "mediator." After they have tried to give an
explanation, write the Greek word used in the Bible: mesites
(mes-ee'-tace), which means a go-between, i.e. (simply) an
internunciator, or (by implication) a reconciler (intercessor).
By using this verse, we can show clearly that prayers should only
be addressed to God (Jesus or the Holy Spirit included) and not
to saints such as Mary. Nevertheless, this is a day to honor
Mary, who was used in a very special way by God to be the mother
of Jesus.
