Children's sermon
Object:
package of M & M candies
“...there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part....”(v. 42a)
Good morning boys and girls,
Well, how are you this morning? (children respond) If you ask me how I am I would say, “terrific.” I am “terrific” because __________________!
I am curious, who has a sister? (children respond) Who has more than one sister? (children respond) Who is a sister here this morning? (children respond)
This morning, our Bible story is about what I call the M & M sisters. M & M stands for Martha and Mary. The M & M sisters are like this candy. (show M & M candy package)
Like this candy, the two sisters have a lot in common. (show how the candies are all alike in shape and taste) Martha and Mary were both from Bethany. Mary and Martha both had a brother Lazaraus. They both were friends of Jesus. They had so much in common, but yet they were so different. (notice the different colored M & Ms) Here's what happened.
Jesus visited his two friends, sisters Martha and Mary. Jesus sat at their home in Bethany and relaxed Martha got busy in the kitchen preparing a meal. Mary plopped down at Jesus' feet and listened while the Lord talked.
You could hear the dishes rattling in the kitchen.
Suddenly, Martha interrupted Mary and Jesus. She scolded Jesus because she, Martha, was doing all the work. Mary wasn't lifting a finger to help. “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to help me.”
Jesus replied… here is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part.”
Boys and girls, what is the “better part?” (children respond)
The good part was, Martha prepared the meal and was being a great hostess. Hospitality is very, very important. But there was the better part, that time was when prayer, listening, and learning from Jesus happened.
God's mission needs both M & M sisters. But one must not neglect the better part. How can children sit at Jesus' feet to learn and pray? (children respond)
(share M and M candies as appropriate)
Prayer: Lord, we see how important it is to serve others like Martha. Help us to also see the most important, the better part, like Mary, to pray, and listen to Jesus. Amen.
