Children's sermon

red, blue, purple crayons and sketch pad
“You shall love the Lord your God....and your neighbor as yourself.” (v. 30a, 31a)
Good morning girls and boys,
It's so good to see you on this Lord's day. I have a question to ask. What is your favorite subject at school? Is it math or music or reading or art or what? (children respond)
When I was in school I loved ____________.
Today we will do a little art to help us learn about one of Jesus' great teachings.
I have here three crayons that we will use in a few seconds. What are they? (children respond)
Yes, red, blue, and purple. Of the three colors which one is your favorite. Let's take a poll. (children raise hand when each color is held up)
Here is a teaching story from the Bible. One day Jesus was asked by a religious person a question. The question was this: “Teacher, which of the commandments is the greatest?“
This was a very good question because the Pharisees and Scribes in those days followed 613 commandments or rules in their religious lives. Also, everybody knew there were 10 commandments. Moses had delivered the 10 Commandments from Mount Sinai on 2 tablets of stone to the people long before.
They asked Jesus, “Which is the greatest of all the commandments?”
You know how Jesus answered this very important question? In essence he said:
“Why there is only 1 in 2 parts.” “You shall love the Lord your God...and your neighbor as yourself.” It was like taking Love to God (use the red crayon for an image) and Love to neighbor (use the blue crayon for an image) and putting them together and you get purple. (color an image both red and blue to produce a purple blended color)
So the greatest commandment in all the world is Love. Love to God and love to neighbor.
So how do you and I obey this one commandment? (children respond)
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus. You showed us the way to love by your life and death on the cross. Now help us to love you back by loving and serving our dear neighbors. Amen.
