Lost and found
Children's sermon
Object:
a lost and found sign
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a special sign today. Who can read the words? (choose a child to read it) That's right, it says LOST AND FOUND. Where might you see a sign like this? (let them answer) You might have a sign like this at school or in a department store. We even have one in the office at church. Have you ever lost anything really special? (let them answer) Suppose you went on a shopping trip with your grandma and you had a really special watch on. You got it for your birthday and you just learned to tell time. You're walking through a store and your grandma asks you what time it is. You look at your watch and it's gone. It has fallen off and it is lost. You look in your pockets. You take your jacket off in case it's stuck inside the sleeve, but it's gone. It's really lost! How would you feel? (let them answer) You feel horrible! It was your favorite birthday present. You feel terrible! Maybe you even cry. You know your parents are going to say that you were supposed to be responsible and take care of your watch. But your grandma suggests looking in the lost and found. You have been to several stores and so you look in each one. Finally in the last store, there's your watch in the lost and found box! Are you excited? (let them answer) Of course you are! You are so excited and happy to have found your watch and your grandma says, "Let's celebrate and get some ice cream!"
Our lesson is about a father who had lost something. He didn't lose a watch, he lost a boy! His son had gone away and didn't come home for a long, long time. The father felt terrible. He was sad and very disappointed. But one day his son came walking up the driveway. The father was so excited to have his son back that he threw his arms out and hugged his son. Then they all had a very big party. Now you will hear this story many times as you are growing up. It has a special name - The Prodigal Son and it's one of the most special stories in the whole Bible. The father said, "... he was lost and is found!" And they began to celebrate.
