"Listen up!"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: This last Sunday before Lent is
important. In the lesson God serves us notice that we are to
"listen up" to Jesus. Jesus is far more powerful than any
President.
* The transfiguration story may be quite mysterious to the
children. Explain it as an encouragement to Jesus about what was
coming to him: Jerusalem and the cross. Explain: "It's like
putting on a coat before going outside in cold weather." The
coat prepares us for the cold. In a similar way, God prepared
Jesus for suffering and death by reminding him that he was God's
own dear son.
* Transfiguration Sunday is also transition Sunday in the
church year. The season of Epiphany ends with this final
revelation and the Lenten season begins this Wednesday.
* Mark the transition by rearranging your classroom (or
perhaps your child's room at home). Begin family devotions at
home if you are not currently doing so.
* Prepare a Lenten countdown calendar. You can make one as
part of your class this week and begin it Wednesday. Commercial
copies are available or you can make a daily calendar with a
prayer emphasis on each day and perhaps a service project idea
for each day.
* Purchase and encourage your children to use Lenten "self-
denial" calendars. Have a special cause for the money collected.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Sing a hymn appropriate for Transfiguration: "Beautiful
Savior," "How Good, Lord, To Be Here," "Shine, Jesus, Shine."
* Memorize the first verse of a transfiguration hymn.
* Act out the transfiguration story with the children.
Explore how this event might have been quite encouraging to Jesus
as he went to Jerusalem to face the cross.
