Teachers or Parents: How does one explain salvation?
Perhaps the most famous verse in the Bible, John 3:16, tells
about God's love. The use of a story and rope or a caduceus help
explain how God translated that love into our salvation. It is
often difficult for children who have been raised in the church
to understand the freedom in Christ from sin and death.
* Have the children memorize John 3:16.
* Discuss "eternal life." Have the children draw pictures of what they think eternal life -- heaven -- might be like.
* Compose a prayer about salvation.
* Ask about how people show love to one another. Then move the discussion to ask about God showing love for us. For Moses, it was the serpent on a pole; for us it is Jesus on the cross. We also experience God's love through the love of Christians for one another.
* The Gospel reading (John 3:14-21) later talks about God's love being like a light that shines in darkness (v. 19-21). Darken the room if you can and talk to the children in the dark about the meaning of darkness to you. Let them share their experience of darkness. From the darkness, light a single candle and show how the candle is like Jesus who gives his light in the darkness.
