Let's Go Fishing
Children's sermon
Object:
Fishing pole or fishing net
“And Jesus said to them, 'Follow me and I will make you fish for people.'” (v. 17)
Good morning boys and girls,
So fun to see you today. How are you? If you were a smiley face what would you look like? Would you be sunny smiley or sad sack or sort of in between? (kids respond) I am a smiley face today because you are here and I have a good news story to tell you.
How many of you have ever gone fishing? You know there are several ways to fish for fish. You can use a fishing pole or a net or spear them. If you ever go fishing how would you fish for fish?
One day Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee and he saw four fishermen fishing with nets. Their names were Simon, Andrew, James and John. (kids repeat the names)
Jesus called out to Simon, Andrew, James and John. He invited them to drop their nets and become fishers of people. And that's just what they did. They dropped their nets and became Jesus' disciples. Soon they would learn how to begin to fish for people by telling them about the good news of Jesus.
Jesus invites us today too to become “fishers of people.” Even children can fish for people by inviting friends to church and church school, to youth activities and service projects. The first step in fishing for people, whether you are a kid or an adult, is to become their friend.
On a small lake in Northern Minnesota an old man was ice fishing. He was grumpy because some children were romping around on the ice making noise and probably scaring away the fish. He wanted peace and quiet. All of a sudden the kids began to yell.
One little kid ran up to the grumpy old man and shouted, “Timmy broke through the ice!” Well, the old man looked up and saw the boy sinking in the icy water. So he picked up his fishing pole, cut the hook off, tossed the line over the boy's arm, and saved little Timmy. So the grumpy old man was not so grumpy now. He hadn't caught a fish but he caught a boy and that was more important.
Prayer: Jesus, when we help someone know you, we too are fishing for people. Amen.
