Keys to the kingdom
Children's Activity
Object:
Parents and Teachers: This lesson tells the story about Peter
receiving the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Tell your students
the story.
See if you can obtain one skeleton key (or another old key) for each student to keep. Bring the keys to class. Also bring yarn or ribbon and small pieces of paper (a 3 1/2 by 4 card stock would be best).
Depending on the age of your students, you may either create some of this project before class, or have the students help. On one side of the sheet of paper write or have your students write either:
"Key of the kingdom of heaven," or
"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven." - Matthew 16:19 On the other side have the student write her name and decorate the card. Have a hole punch to punch the card. Tie the card to the key with the ribbon or yarn. Tell your students that as key holders to the kingdom of God that they are new disciples of Christ.
Extra Activity
As an extra activity to this lesson see if you can obtain a number of keys and padlocks. Take the keys from the padlocks and see if the students can figure out which keys go with which locks.
Special note about next week
Ask your students to bring Legos to class next week (Aug. 29). Read the activity planned for Aug. 29 now so that you may plan for that session.
