Again Peter denied it, and at that moment the cock crowed. (v. 18:27)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you today? (allow answers) How many of you know what today is? (allow answers) Today is Good Friday. What do we remember on Good Friday? (allow answers) Today we remember Jesus' arrest and his death on the cross.
Our gospel lesson today is very long: It tells the whole story of Jesus' arrest in the garden and ending with his burial in the tomb.
One person who plays an important part in this story is Simon Peter. When Jesus is arrested, Simon Peter is so angry that he cuts off someone's ear! He seems like he is Jesus' greatest supporter.
But then Jesus is arrested. The disciples scatter. And Simon Peter finds himself in the city, warming his hands around a fire with the same people who came to arrest Jesus!
What would you do if you were Simon Peter? (allow answers) You could go into ninja mode and attack all of the people there -- serves them right for arresting Jesus! But is that what Simon Peter did? (allow answers) No. Remember, he had just seen his teacher arrested. He didn't know where any of his friends were. He was alone, at night, in a city where he wasn't welcome. So what did he do? He pretended like he didn't know Jesus.
Three times Simon Peter said that he didn't know Jesus. People kept asking him -- "Hey, weren't you friends with that guy? The one they just arrested? I swear I've seen you before…" But Peter said NO! "No, I don't know him. Who are you talking about? No, no, no -- that's not me!"
Suddenly, the rooster crowed, letting everyone know that morning was beginning. And suddenly, Simon Peter realized what he had done. While Jesus had been arrested -- while Jesus was probably being questioned and hurt for his teachings -- Simon Peter didn't even have the courage to admit that he was friends with Jesus. Simon Peter had lied to protect himself, while his teacher and friend was being held by the police in city that wanted him dead.
If you were Simon Peter, how would you feel? (allow answers) You would feel as if you didn't deserve as good of a friend as Jesus. You would feel like you didn't deserve his love and sacrifice.
All of us feel this way sometimes. We feel like we have betrayed Jesus in our lives, and we don't deserve his love and grace. But do you know what? Jesus still loves us. He knows that sometimes we, like Simon Peter, are frightened. He knows that sometimes we forget about the love of God that supports us, that wraps us like a warm, safe blanket. But Jesus forgave Simon Peter -- and he will forgive us. That is what Good Friday is really all about. Amen.
