Jesus is worthy!
Children's sermon
Object:
a nickel and a dime (also perhaps a roll of nickels and a
roll of dimes)
Which is worth more -- the nickel or the dime? If we judged by
size, we might say that the nickel is worth more. But the dime is
worth twice as much as the nickel.
What does "worthy" mean? Can someone tell me? (Let them answer.) "Worthy" means valuable.
Now, let me ask you another question: What does "worship" mean? Believe it or not, it is similar to "worthy." Only the One who is worth honoring as God and Lord should be worshipped. The word "worship" actually comes from an old word meaning "worth- ship."
The book of Revelation says Jesus is "worthy" of worship and honor and power and might and blessing. We know he is worthy -- he is worth more than anything! Jesus paid the price of worth. Jesus obeyed God and did everything that God wanted him to do -- even dying on the cross. Since he was obedient, he is worthy. We honor Jesus even today because he is worthy.
One of the wonderful things about Jesus' worth is that he makes all who believe in him "worthy" as well. There is nothing we can do to prove how good we are. There is nothing we can do to earn God's favor. There is no contest to win and no prize to shoot for because our worthiness is free. Our worthiness is based on Jesus.
Jesus is the most worthy person who ever lived because he made the rest of us worthy of the kingdom of heaven. We obey God because we want to and not because we have to earn anything from God.
The most fun part is that we worship Jesus today and every Sunday and every day.
