Jesus Helps
Children's sermon
Object:
a flashlight
The Point: Jesus is God's Son.
The Lesson: Thank you, boys and girls, for sharing this time with me. Have you ever been in a thunder and lightning storm when all the power in your house went out? (let children answer) If it is at night, the darkness can really be scary. When that happens to me, I reach for my flashlight. Do you have a flashlight at your house? (let children answer) Does a flashlight help you feel better in the dark? (let children answer) When you have a flashlight the darkness isn't so frightening, but the sound of the thunder, the flashing of the lightning, and the roar of the wind and rain is still frightening. But the light from a flashlight helps you to find your way. In the light of your flashlight you can read, find something in the kitchen to eat, or just shine it around to chase away the darkness. A flashlight can be your friend on a stormy dark night.
We just heard about another great storm. The followers of Jesus are in a boat on the Sea of Galilee. It is dark and a great storm is blowing around them. They are frightened. Jesus came to them. But Jesus was walking on water. In Jesus' presence Peter was willing to get out of the boat and try walking on the water. He did okay until he stopped looking at Jesus and looked at the terror of the storm about him. Even then Jesus reached out and saved Peter. When Jesus and Peter got into the boat the disciples became calm. Jesus was their light in the midst of the storm and with him they knew they had nothing to fear. After all, Jesus walked in the midst of the storm, saved Peter, and now the storm stopped. They knew that they were with God's Son who had come to save them.
The light of a flashlight will give you comfort in the darkness of a storm. A flashlight can help you find a path when it is dark.
Jesus gives a light no storm can put out. Jesus can help you no matter how scared you may be because he is the Son of God. The Son of God invites you to walk with him and when you stumble or grow weak, he will lift you up. Jesus is truly your friend on a stormy dark night and at any time.
Closing Prayer: Let us pray: Jesus sometimes life is hard. Sometimes we are frightened and scared. In those times may we discover you walking to us. Let your love light the lives of your children. Always be their shelter and comfort in the midst of the storms of life. Jesus, Son of God, walk with us all. Amen.
