Jesus' birth certificate

Teachers or Parents: The words of our Gospel text are awesome!
"The word became flesh and lived among us." God, Himself, became
a man! No matter how many times we hear it, it's still an awesome
statement. We need to transmit to our children an understanding
of how wonderful this birth we celebrate really is. This is not
just a birthday of a famous man. This is the day God became a man
in order to save all of us from the consequences of our sin.
*Make a list on the board or easel of all the national
holidays we celebrate throughout the year, with Christmas listed
in along with the others. Ask the children to identify what they
think is the most important holiday and explain why they think
so. Most will name Christmas, but perhaps for the wrong reasons.
Make sure they understand that the birth of Christ is the most
important event in all of history, because on that day God
entered the world as a man to save all of us. No other event in
history has any importance when compared to this one.
*Ask the children to draw a picture of the manger scene with
as much detail as they can. Ask them to include in their drawing
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, shepherds, wise men, and animals. Let
each show their picture and name the most important person in the
picture and tell why they think that person is the most
important. Most will name Jesus, but lead them to see why Jesus
is so important to all of us.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Sing a Christmas carol such as "O Little Town Of Bethlehem."
