'I'm Hungry' -- Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
Make a 2-sided circle (or square) out of tag board. Attach to popsicle stick. On one side imprint a sketch of Jesus. On the other side imprint a hungry person.
“...Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” (v. 40b)
Happy New Year children,
Have you had your breakfast this morning? Are you hungry? Thirsty?
Do you ever complain, “mom, dad, I have nothing to wear?” (children respond)
Do you ever feel lonely or have times when you need a friend? (children respond)
So what is your favorite food? My favorite food is _____________.
Here’s another question. Are there people in the world who have little or no food?
(presenter may share facts and/or statistics about world hunger)
I have a sketch of Jesus. (show the “Jesus” side)
If Jesus were here physically and pleaded, “I’m hungry,” what would you do?
Would you give him a sandwich? (children respond)
When Jesus weeps saying “I’m thirsty” what would you do? Would you give him a drink of water or a Dr. Pepper? (children respond)
When Jesus says he feels like a stranger and is terribly lonely, what would you do? Would you have him join the YMCA? (children respond)
Since Jesus is not here physically, but is here in another, greater way, we can feed him!
We can give him a drink! We can be his friend! We can visit him in prison!
Know how? Whenever we do it to our brothers and sisters throughout the world we do it to Jesus. When kids, moms, dads, and families who are hungry and thirsty are fed, we are doing those gracious deeds to Jesus. (show hungry person on visual aid) (flip back and forth several times)
In the judgment scene in the Bible, Jesus said, “...Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”
Think of a New Year’s habit you could do to feed, clothe, and visit Jesus.
Prayer: Jesus you cared for us on the cross, help us to care for you. Amen.
