Hit the bull's-eye!
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers and Parents: The central truth of Christianity is
stated in this week's Gospel. John 3:16 is often called "The
Gospel in a Nutshell." Those who believe in the Son will be given
eternal life. We cannot earn our way into Heaven. Heaven is a
free gift for those who believe. Our children need to learn this
truth and hold onto it firmly, because worldly wisdom will try to
convince them that Heaven must be reserved for those who do
enough "good stuff."
* Write this question on the board or easel: If you died
today and went to Heaven and God asked you why He should let you
in, what would you answer? Go around the group getting answers
from volunteers. Chances are that all of the answers will have
something to do with their own good works and behavior. Then read
John 3:16 and ask them where it says anything about their own
good works. It says that those who believe will have eternal
life. Make sure they understand that Heaven is a free gift and
cannot be earned by good works. You may also want to read
Ephesians 2:8-9 and discuss it.
* Bring a padlock and a key. Label the key that fits the
padlock "Faith." Label a number of other keys with all kinds of
good works such as "Obey the commandments of God" or "Helping the
poor." Throw all the keys into a container and have the children
each draw out a key. Have them all try to unlock the padlock, the
"good works" keys going first. Finally have the child with the
"Faith" key open the padlock.
Explain that the key to Heaven is faith, not good works.
