He's coming back!
Children's sermon
Object:
as many different images of Jesus as you can find in
Sunday school material, books, magazines, pictures, and so forth
Good morning! Today I brought a picture of someone you
might know. (At this time show them the first image of Jesus.)
You are correct. You guessed that this was Jesus. Now, let me
show you another picture. (Show them a second image of Jesus.)
Again, this is Jesus. But this picture looks different from the
first one, doesn't it? (You may choose to show yet a third
image or more.)
Have you noticed that I don't have any photographs of Jesus here? (Let them answer.) All we have are what artists have drawn or painted. Why do you suppose there is no picture of Jesus taken by someone with a camera? (Let them answer.) It is because Jesus lived a long time ago -- long before anyone had the idea for inventing a camera.
The truth is that no one really knows what Jesus looked like while he was among human beings. All we have are artists' impressions of Jesus. They tell what they think Jesus looked like. But no one really knows!
Many times I have wondered just what Jesus looked like. But I don't yet know. Someday, however, I will know, because Jesus is coming again. I didn't get to see him the first time he came to this earth -- about 2,000 years ago. But I will get to see him the next time because that is the promise of the Bible. Jesus will appear to us -- to all who believe in him -- a second time.
That means we are not left out. Jesus knows you and me and loves us and will show himself to us -- someday. But until he does, we simply believe in Jesus and trust him.
Dearest Jesus: Thank you for coming to earth 2,000 years ago, and thank you for the promise that we shall see you ourselves. Amen.
