Hebrews 2:10-18
Children's sermon
Object:
a nickel, a dime and a quarter coin
Good morning, boys and girls. I have three coins in my hands.
Each of the coins has the same words on it. Do you know what
those words are? (Let them answer.) Each says, "In God we
trust." What do you suppose that means? (Let them answer.) It means that we trust in God. We trust God to help us and to guide
us. We learn to trust God by praying to God, by praising God, and
by learning more about God when we attend Sunday school and
church.
There are times when everyone needs to turn to someone for help or guidance. Who do you go to for help when you are sick? (Let them answer.) You go to the doctor. Who do you call for help if there is a fire? (Let them answer.) You call the fire station. I hope you never have to call the fire station. Who helps you learn at school? (Let them answer.) Your teacher helps you. All these people have one thing in common. We must trust them. They are very important to us. Oh, I almost forgot. Who helps and guides you at home? (Let them answer.) Of course, your parents. We trust our parents, too.
Well, you can see that there are many people we learn to trust for many things. When these people help us, we thank them in different ways. When your parents help you, how do you thank them? (Let them answer.) Do you give them hugs? Do you help them around the house by cleaning your room or picking up your toys? Those actions show that you appreciate them.
We also trust God, who is our heavenly parent. We trust God because we know that just as our doctor, our fireman, our teacher and our parents take care of us, God takes care of us too.
Does anyone know how we thank God for taking care of us? (Let them answer.) Our Bible story today says that one way is to praise God during church. That's why during church we sing songs that praise God. We read verses that praise God. We also pray. Our prayers thank God for helping us.
When you think of all the important people in your lives that you can trust don't forget your heavenly parent. One way to remember that you can trust God is by looking at the coins in your pockets. Remember what it says on the coins: "In God we trust."
