He was called Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
a favorite stuffed animal
(Note: as an option, invite a young couple with a newborn to
come with you. Have the couple tell the children what name
they've given their child and why. Relate the newborn to the
lesson.)
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have a name? (Let them answer.) Of course, each of us has a name, don't we? I brought someone with me this morning. (Show the stuffed animal.) This is (tell the name of the stuffed animal). It is a favorite stuffed animal in our family. (Tell the children about the background of the stuffed animal. Tell how it got its name.)
Do any of you have favorite stuffed animals that you've named? (Let them answer. Invite some of the children to tell about their animals and how they were named.)
Today is called the Holy Name of Jesus Sunday. It's called that because in today's lesson is the story about Mary and Joseph taking their baby Jesus to the Temple for the first time. It was in their tradition to take young babies to the Temple and give them a name. By doing this they dedicated their child in God's presence.
Did you know that when you were a newborn baby your parents probably brought you to church also? They may have named you after someone in your family. You might be named after one of your parents or grandparents. Mary and Joseph gave the name of Jesus to Mary's son. They did this because the angel called him Jesus before he was born.
The next time you are playing with your favorite stuffed animal or are deciding on a name for one, remember that names are important. Your stuffed animals and their names are important. Jesus and his name is important to us also. Remember that Jesus received his name from the angel before Jesus was born.
