He had compassion
Children's sermon
Object:
a can of sardines and a small loaf of bread
Good morning! What would you think if I said that I brought
all the food today for a congregational picnic after worship this
morning and this (the sardines and bread) is it? (Let them
answer.) You might say I was crazy or something, wouldn't you? We
all know that this would not be nearly enough food for everyone.
This would not be enough for many people at all. Besides that,
many people don't even like sardines! Do you like sardines? (Let
them answer.)
I don't know how to explain how Jesus took five loaves of bread and two fish and fed over 5,000 people! That's an amazing story. I don't know how Jesus did it, but I do know why. Jesus fed all these people because he knew they were hungry. Not only did Jesus feed the people because they were hungry, but also he healed those who were sick! He did this because he had compassion (v. 14).
That word "compassion" tells me a lot about Jesus. It tells me that Jesus cared very much for other people. He didn't want people to suffer. He didn't want people to feel hungry and to go without. Jesus loved people so much that when they hurt, he hurt, too.
When I read stories about Jesus and his compassion -- his concern for others, then I know Jesus really does love even me! I learn from Jesus' love to love others as well. Christians always have compassion for other people -- especially the sick, the hungry, and others who hurt. The Christian Church does a lot of good in this world by feeding the hungry and working in hospitals to ease the suffering of those who are ill. Christians help poor people build houses, and they provide medicine to those too poor to get it on their own. Christians today love others the way Jesus loved others in the days when he ministered on this earth.
I'm so very glad to know about Jesus and his love for me and for you and of his great love for those who suffer. Whenever I feel ill or suffer in any way, I know that Jesus cares for me. That's good to know, isn't it? (Let them answer.)
Dearest Jesus: Give us such a love for others that we especially care about people who suffer. Amen.
