He followed Jesus
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Play "Simon Says" again. Then vary the
game by saying, "Jesus says ..." Use some examples from life
about what "Jesus says ..." and what the world might say to us.
For example, "Jesus says we should love our neighbor." "The world
says we should get even when someone hurts us." "Jesus says we
should try to do good." "The world says we should do what feels
good." These examples could be multiplied many times. Jesus plays
a game of "Jesus says" in the Sermon on the Mount when he says,
"You have heard ... But I say to you ..." (Matthew 5:21-48).
*Look up the word "disciple" together in a dictionary or Bible dictionary. (Some Bibles have a nice Bible dictionary in them.) Discuss the biblical meaning of the word. Ask, "Do we use the word 'disciple' much when we speak today?"
*Tie in the Old Testament example of discipleship in Abraham (given as the second lesson today from Paul's letter to the Romans [4:13-25]). Abraham followed God just as Matthew followed Jesus.
*Ask, "Who are good followers of Jesus in our congregation?" Ask, "What makes these people good examples of modern disciples?"
*Draw a picture of Jesus calling Matthew. (If you had the class draw a picture of Jesus last Sunday, you could use the same drawings done then and place the children's drawings of Matthew beside them.)
*Draw a picture of Jesus calling you.
