"Have the right answer"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: The simple Gospel truth that we are
saved as a gift of God through faith and not by our own works is
the hardest truth for Christians to hold on to. Human reason
keeps insisting that we are saved, at least to some degree, by
our own actions. If we can instill in our children an
understanding that Jesus has done all that is required for us to
get into Heaven and those who believe in him will have eternal
life as a gift, we will have accomplished the most important part
of their Christian education.
* Make up several cards with all kinds of good works printed
on them. Label them as "Perfect attendance at Sunday school,"
"Giving money to the church," "Helping the poor," "Doing my
chores at home," and so forth. You may want to include cards for
each of the Ten Commandments. Label one card, "Faith in Jesus
Christ as my Savior." Play a game where the children win cards
for some activity. Play until all the cards are gone. Then have
everyone read the cards they have accumulated and ask them which
of the cards will get them into heaven. Make sure they understand
that only the Faith card will get them into heaven and explain
that all the other works are good for us to do because we are
God's saved people, but not in order to be saved.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Sing one of the hymns from the Faith and Justification
portion of your hymnal, such as "Rock Of Ages" or "Thy Works, Not
Mine, O Christ."
