God is with us
Children's sermon
Object:
yellow and green finger paints and an easel with some paper on it
Good morning, boys and girls. Isn't it great to be here in church? You look wonderful today. Does anyone want to sing a favorite song you learned in Sunday school? (have one of the elementary teachers primed to lead them in a song; otherwise lead them in "Jesus Loves Me") That was great. It makes me feel good to hear you sing. I like to sing with you and that also makes me feel great.
Did anyone notice that God is here? (let them answer) It's true. We can't see him like we can see Mr. (name a parishioner), but God is here. The Bible tells us that God is with us all of the time. As a matter of fact, when you go home, God will go with you. When you go to school and you ride on the bus, God is with you.
Sometimes we forget how close God is to us. I brought along something to help us remember that. Let's pretend that you (pick one of the children) are yellow paint. And let's suppose that you (pick another one of the children) are blue paint. I have some yellow paint and I have some blue paint.
Now I am going to put some yellow paint on this side of the picture (on easel) and I am going to put some blue paint on this side of the picture. In other words, here is Sally and here is Mike. Now Sally gets up in the morning and gets on the school bus. (paint a line of yellow) A few minutes later Mike walks out of his house and waits for the bus. (paint a blue line close to the yellow line) The bus comes and picks up Mike and he sees Sally and goes over and sits down beside her. (paint the blue over the yellow)
Oh, my gosh! What happened to the yellow and blue paint? (let them answer) That's right, it turned green. Do you know what happened? The Bible tells us that when two or three are gathered together Jesus is with us. God joins us. Once we were all alone, but when we get together and ask God to join us we become one with God. Isn't that neat? By ourselves we are okay, but when we are together and we meet like we are meeting today in church or when we go with our Christian parents or friends, we are one with God.
Prayer: Thank you for being with us all the time, O God. Amen.
