The gift of the Spirit
Children's sermon

various symbols of the Holy Spirit (for example: a dove, a flame, wind, etc.)
Today is the Day of Pentecost. This is the day that the church celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit to the world. Before Jesus went back up to heaven, he promised his followers that they wouldn't be alone. He promised that God would send a helper to direct us and show us the way to live.
The Holy Spirit has a lot of different names in the Bible. He is called the Counselor, the Helper, the Comforter, the Teacher, the Spirit of Wisdom, the Spirit of Peace, and many, many other things. The Spirit is represented by lots of different symbols too. Here are a few I brought with me today. (Show the symbols you brought and explain them.)
All of the Holy Spirit's roles are important, but the one mentioned in today's reading is one of my favorites. Today we learn that one of the Spirit's biggest jobs is to remind us of the things that Jesus taught. Jesus was the most important teacher the world has ever known. He taught us how to treat one another and how to take care of our world. When he went up to heaven his followers were scared of being without him. They didn't think that they were strong enough to live their lives without him, but the good news is that they didn't have to do it alone. The Holy Spirit came to be with them and help them stay on the right path.
The Holy Spirit is God's gift to you, too. When you need strength, help, or comfort, the Holy Spirit can give it to you. The Spirit is here to teach us about God and help us learn to live the way God wants us to live. It's just like having Jesus walking right here with us. Even though the Spirit is invisible, it is with us all the time. God has given the world so many gifts, and the gift of his Spirit is one of the greatest.
Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the gift of your Spirit. Through the Spirit, teach us how to love you and love each other more every day. Amen.
