The gift
Children's sermon
Object:
a Christmas package with wrapping and bow
Christmas Eve has arrived and I wonder, what is it we
celebrate on Christmas? Can one of you tell me? (Let them
answer.) We celebrate the birth of Jesus. Christmas is Jesus'
birthday!
Birthdays are always special, but Jesus' birthday is
especially special because Jesus was God's gift to the whole
world. Because Jesus was born, he grew up and began a ministry
of teaching that taught the people a long time ago and people
today that God is love and that whoever believes in him will have
eternal life. Jesus grew up and began healing many people of all
kinds of sicknesses. Even today, through our prayers and the
power of faith, people receive healing and relief from pain.
Jesus was born, grew up, and began preaching a message of good
news to all people. All these years later, we still preach the
good news of God's love that came to us through Jesus. All these
things we have because Jesus was born. Jesus is the best gift of
all at Christmas!
So we give gifts to each other -- even though it is Jesus'
birthday and not ours. The little gifts we give each other
remind us of the real gift God has given us. That gift is ...
who? (Let them answer.) That gift is Jesus. Our little gifts
remind us of that big gift from God.
There is another gift that I would like for you to think
about. That is the gift that is YOU. Now most of us don't think
about being gifts. We think about getting gifts -- at Christmas
and on our birthdays. But just as Jesus is the real gift at
Christmas, so you are a gift that God has given this world.
God has given you as a gift because God truly loves you.
You are important to God. Since you are so important to God, God
gives us the best gift possible: Jesus! God loves you; I love
you; and I am sure you have parents and others who love you. And
we are all thankful for the great gifts of YOU and JESUS!
Dearest Lord Jesus: Thank you for you! Thank you for Christmas!
Thank you for each other! Thank you for ourselves! Amen.
