The gift
Children's sermon
Object:
none
Good morning! I want to tell you a story this morning. Once
there were a bunch of children at a summer camp, and they were
having a great time. They were swimming, hiking, playing games,
fishing, boating, and doing all kinds of fun stuff. One day, one
of the children painted some graffiti all over one of the camp
buildings. The camp director called everyone together and asked
who had done it, but nobody would confess. So the director said
that there would be no more fun until someone confessed. No
playing, no swimming, no nothing until there was a confession.
All the children had to stay in their cabins and wait until
someone confessed. How would you feel if that happened to you?
(Let them answer.)
Well, the child who did it wouldn't confess and nobody knew
who had done it, so there they sat. It was a real bummer!
Finally, one of the children decided that this had to end so
everyone could get back to having fun. So he went to the director
and said that he had done it. He hadn't really done it, but he
wanted the punishment to end for the others, so he confessed to
something he hadn't really done, and he was punished for it. If
you knew what this child had done for you, how would you feel
about him? (Let them answer.) Yes, I think you would be really
grateful that he had done this for you.
Actually, that's what Jesus did for us. He wasn't guilty of
anything, but he went to the cross and was punished there for
something that you and I did. He died on the cross to pay for our
sins. Because he gave us this wonderful gift, we are free from
our sins and we know that we will have eternal life with God in
Heaven. Isn't that a wonderful gift that he gave us? (Let them
answer.) Let's thank him for this gift.
Dear Jesus: We thank you so much for taking our punishment for us
so that we could be free from our sins and have eternal life.
Thank you for this marvelous gift. Amen.
