The Future in the Star
Children's Activity
Object:
Parents or Teachers: The lesson today was about always being prepared
and not trying to predict the future. We know that the immediate future
after the Advent season is Christmas. During Advent it is always fun to
have some sort of an Advent calendar. If you have some old Advent
calendars, bring them and share them with the students. Talk about the
purpose of Advent being to prepare for Christmas. Each family prepares in
different ways. Discuss some of their family traditions. Some prepare
only materially with extensive gift giving. Others concentrate on spiritual
preparation with increased attendance at worship services. Still others
combine a variety of experiences: material, spiritual and involving all five
senses. On a large five-point star on a posterboard, use each point of the
star for one of the five senses -- sight, hearing, smelling, tasting and
touching. In each point of the star list five things for each sense. Sight
might be Christmas lights, Advent candles, a wreath, an ornament you got
when you were a baby and red ribbon bows. Hearing might be Christmas
carols, jingling bells, choirs on the radio, Salvation Army bells and an
Advent children's sermon. Smelling could be cinnamon, candles burning,
pine tree, ham or turkey cooking, or coffee bread or cake. Tasting could be
snow on our tongue, Christmas candy, Christmas cookies, warm cider, or
gingerbread. Touching could be hugging, holding hands while shopping,
holding the candle on Christmas Eve, hanging up ornaments or decorations
and kissing under the mistletoe. These are only suggestions. Be creative.
Make up a list of each of the 25 items each divided by a line (boxed in) so
each one can be cut out. Cut out a star or have a pattern available (five-
pointed). Cut out each item and glue it in one point of the star (one point
for each of the five senses). Provide each child with 25 purchased stickers
or stars and each day they can pick one item to use one of their senses on
and put a sticker on it. When all the stickers are on the items, it will be
Christmas.
