Friends forever
Children's sermon
Object:
a baby photo of yourself
"The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother." (v. 15)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today I brought a photo of myself as a baby. How many of you have baby photos at home of yourself, or maybe of your brother or sister or parent? (allow answers) Baby photos are fun to look at, because we can see how much we have grown and changed since we were first born.
What are some ways we change when we grow older? (allow answers) We grow bigger, definitely! We grow stronger and smarter. We learn to do things like walk, run, and speak. The more we grow, the more things we learn how to do, and the more responsibility we have. When you were a baby, did you have any chores? (allow answers) When did you start to have chores to do around the house? (allow answers) The older you get, the more things your parents will probably ask you to do, because you will be bigger and able to handle more responsibility. When you grow up and move to your own house, you will have lots and lots of responsibility!
There is one thing that doesn't change when we grow up. No matter how old we grow, we still need our friends and family. When you are a baby, you need lots of help doing everything. Friends and family are there to help you eat, to help you get dressed, to change your diaper. What else do friends and family do for you when you are a baby? (allow answers) The older you get, the more of these things you can do on your own. But even as an adult, you still need friends and family around you. They may not help you with the same things, like getting dressed or feeding yourself, but they can help you with other things. What reasons do you think you will need friends and family when you are grown up? (allow answers)
Grown-ups need their friends and family so that they have people to talk to and to hang out with. They need friends and family to help them if they are moving to a new house or to help them if they have to take care of a new baby. They need their friends and family to be a support group of love when times get tough or sad things happen.
Our Bible lesson today talks about a man that Jesus raised from the dead. When the man sat up and began to speak, the verse says that "Jesus gave him to his mother." The man was full-grown, but he still needed the love and support that his mother could give him. As you grow older, remember that you have that network of love and support. It is your family, your friends, and your church family. No matter how old you get, you will never outgrow that. Amen.
