Following isn't easy
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Children need to be taught early that
being a Christian is not always easy. Sometimes it means
sacrifice, perhaps even a great sacrifice, to remain faithful to
God. In this Gospel passage, Jesus makes it clear that we must be
ready to make serious sacrifices if we are to be faithful
Christians.
*Pass out quarters to all the children and set up a little
store where they can spend the quarter on candy, a toy, or
something else they might want. Then explain to them that they
can buy something they want OR they can put the quarter in an
offering basket where it will go to some kind of mission work
that your church is involved in. Have a brief discussion on which
choice a real follower of Jesus would make and then let them come
up and do whatever they want. When they have all made a choice,
discuss with them how some, perhaps all of them, were willing to
make a sacrifice in order to be followers of Jesus.
Sunday school assembly opening:
*Open with a hymn like "Savior, I Follow On" or "Jesus, Lead
Thou On."
*Ask them to identify some aspect of their life that
involves a sacrifice they make because they are Christians.
Discuss the kinds of sacrifices that real followers must be
willing to make.
