“Jesus said to Philip, 'follow me.'” (v. 43b)
Good morning girls and boys,
I am going to take a pet poll this morning. How many of you children have pets?
(children respond enthusiastically) My next survey question is, what kind of pets do you have? (children respond even more excitedly)
If you have a well trained dog and call out “Come Shep, or Come Daisy” the dog will wag his tail, pant excitedly and follow you. You can then go for a fun walk. And it doesn't hurt to have a little treat in your pocket does it?
When your mom and Dad call you to follow them somewhere to show you something fun or important what do you do? Do you run away? Talk back nastily? Run and hide under your bed? Or get up and follow them to wherever they have invited you? (children may respond)
When your teacher says “come and follow me I want to teach you something” what do you do? Do you say, “oh I know everything” or “I'm too tired” or “just leave me alone?” Or do you obediently and eagerly hop to it?
One day Jesus decided to go to a place called Galilee. He found a fellow by the name of Philip from the city of Bethsaida and said to Philip, “follow me.” What did Philip do?
He quickly followed Jesus. To follow Jesus means to become his student, his friend, his disciple. And then Jesus sees a fellow named Nathaniel and he too follows Jesus.
Eventually Jesus would have twelve fellows follow him as his beloved disciples.
Did you know that Jesus calls you and me to follow him today. Jesus needs disciples today just like long long ago. Did you know that Jesus invited you to be his disciple when you were baptized. You began to follow him the day you were baptized.
And today when you listen carefully, Jesus is calling you to follow him.
How does Jesus do that? You listen to your heart. (listen with stethoscope)
Prayer: Dear Jesus, help me to listen carefully to your call to follow you and then
do it by the help of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
