Fair play
Children's sermon

Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. (v. 7)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) How many of you have played a game -- maybe even soccer -- before? (allow answers) Did you win or lose the game? (allow answers) How does it feel to win a game? (allow answers) It feels pretty good, doesn't it? Now, how does it feel to lose a game? (allow answers) It's not fun to lose! Sometimes we feel like we should have won, not lost. We feel like the game was unfair.
In fact, there are lots of things in our lives that we sometimes feel are unfair. Can you tell me about something that is unfair? (allow answers) There are things in our own lives that are unfair: maybe one of our friends gets a new toy and we don't or maybe it rains on our birthday. There are also big things in the world that are unfair: it is unfair when someone has an accident and dies and it is unfair that some countries have lots of money and some countries don't have any.
When we feel like something is unfair, we feel like we are not receiving the same amount of good things that we are giving to others. We are not getting good payback for our actions.
Our gospel lesson today teaches us that even though things in our lives might not be fair, God is always fair. Our gospel says that even when we have troubles -- if we are meek and never get our way, if we are kind but people are not kind back to us, if we work for peace but live in a world that is still full of war. God promises us that even if we are not rewarded for the good things we do in our lives, we will be rewarded for our good work when we die. God will be fair to us.
In a way, life is like a big soccer game and God is our referee. We can trust that he will be fair to us and make the right calls. If we win in this soccer game, we know that we deserve it and we know that it is perfectly fair. Amen.
